Sustainability strategy

Sustainability is central part of our strategy. As a company we try actively to reduce any possible negative impact and increase our positive impact on People, the Planet and Profit. In order to do so we carried out a Carbon Accounting of all our operations. This gives us the means to set concrete goals on impact reduction in energy, waste or transport. Alsico now offers a fully circular product in partnership with Dutch Awearness. The workwear is made out of a 100% polyester fabric, that is fully recyclable up to eight times. Circular products are not some far away dream, we are making them today. Increasing positive impact is not some promise, we are working on it, every day.

Managing sustainability is a continuous improvement process, used to verify implementation of our program’s objectives. We are in the process of coordinating our management and organization structures to this end in order to create clear lines of responsibility in all business departments. We operate according to ISO 9001:2015, which enables continuous improvement of our organization’s quality management systems and processes. In return, this improves the ability of our operation system to meet customer requirements and expectations.

These are the labels which we account for:

GRI - Global Reporting Initiative offers a framework to report on sustainable development. Alsico has chosen to use GRI, on the one hand in order to be transparent about the sustainability of its operations, but also in order to determine its strategy with measurable short term goals and a long term vision. Yearly, a score card will show the goals that were achieved and the working points. This instrument will offer the opportunity to fine-tune our strategy in terms of sustainability and to carry it to all the stakeholders, as well external, but also internal, to all the employees of the organization. We see reporting as a way to strive to efficiency and sustainability in all our processes as well for all day operations, as when it comes to management decisions. It is searching for improvements on a small scale and making our first important step to a more sustainable world economy.

ILO - As "faminational", world player with the right family values, we follow the guidelines set by the ILO (International Labour Organisation).

BSCI logo

BSCI - The Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) is an initiative of the FTA (Foreign Trade Agency) = group of companies which comply to a common Code of Conduct, based on the principles of international conventions, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Children’s Rights and Business Principles, UN Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights, OECD Guidelines, UN Global Compact and International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions and Recommendations relevant to improve working conditions in the supply chain. All members have access to the BSCI platform, where they list their suppliers and producers. Audits can be organized and followed through this platform. BSCI has been identified as strategic point in our Sustainable Development and is being implemented in our production facilities.

ISO 9001

ISO 9001 - We follow ISO 9001:2015, which enables continuous improvement of our organization’s quality management systems and processes. In turn, this improves the ability of our operations to meet customer requirements and expectations. ISO 9001 has been identified as strategic point in our Sustainable Development. It is our will to introduce this system in our supply chain.

ISO 14001

ISO 14001 - ISO 14001:2015 sets out the criteria for an environmental management system. It maps out the framework to set up an effective environmental management system. Alsico NV complies with Belgian environmental laws. We measure our energy consumption and monitor CO2 emissions in order to lower our footprint. Waste is sorted and collected by an acknowledged waste collection company. Cutting waste for instance is recycled into insulation material. In the future, we will continue to monitor our emissions, waste disposal, energy consumption in order to continuously reduce our impact on the environment.

OEKO-TEX - All our fabrics are Oeko-tex 100 which means they do not contain harmful substances for the wearer.

FAIRTRADE - Organization which strives to guarantee honest wages to local producers. Besides this, Fairtrade international is also responsible for local initiatives which help the local population.

FLOCERT - Auditing organization which issues Fairtrade certificates. (Our production site in Morocco has Flocert and produces Fairtrade garments).

Alsico supplier Code of conduct

The Alsico supplier code of conduct was signed by our 10 biggest suppliers, which represent 80 % of our purchases, as well by the Alsico group production sites. The aim of this Alsico Supplier Code of Conduct is to implement the ethics of the Alsico Group throughout the entire chain. Where necessary, the group will help, support and control its suppliers.

Social compliance

As Alsico Group we own most of our Production Units. This means that we are the decision maker and that the factories are lead and organized according to our standards. We are in control, and in accordance to our values, we ensure that workers get paid more than minimum wage, that a maximum number of working hours is respected, etc. This can be found in the Internal Regulation documents of the various factories. For over more than 40 years, Alsico has been operating in less favored countries. Our ethics and way of conducting business have helped people and community to develop locally. As BSCI member, Alsico NV will ask its production sites to pass audits in order to be compliant with the BSCI code of conduct. In a second phase, production sites will gradually, where possible, be asked to become SA8000 certified. We are working on a document which clearly describes our objectives and target agreements.
