We already measure the environmental impact of our own offices, which has created awareness of our resource consumption. This will help us to manage our resources in a more efficient and effective way and reduce our CO2 footprint. When producing CO2 free is not possible, the aim should be to offset our footprint. We understand that our impact goes much further than our own operations or the final point of manufacturing. In fact, the major impacts are generated at the raw material generation level and along the supply chain, rather than within Alsico’s own operations. Considering this, together with constant dialogue with our key stakeholders, we decided to focus on several areas:
As each year, over 80 billion pieces of clothing are produced worldwide, 75 % of which will end up in landfills or be incinerated, we consider it our duty to rise customers’ consciousness and encourage them to use the ALSICO “recycling bins” for collecting used clothes before upcycling them to acoustic and thermal insulation.
We try to reduce our impact and strive to make our processes as efficient as possible.
Electricity consumption has diminished by 2014 and has increased in 2015. In 2014, we switched to energy efficient lighting in our workshop, which explains the drop of electricity consumption that year. The figures for 2015 also include electricity consumption of sister company, Alsico Hightech, which moved to the building next to our warehouse. 2016 will show more accurate Alsico figures, as meanwhile we have installed a new separate meter.
550 solar panels contribute to more than 50% of our electricity consumption.
By 2017, 100% of our used electricity consumption will be green.
The usage of natural gas and heating oil has dropped significantly thanks to the installation of a new heating system with wood pellets. This is used for heating in the garments workshop and the refectory.
The badger pellets used for our heating system are CO2 neutral. These wood fuel pellets are formed from sawdust, from wood sawing. This comes exclusively from resinous wood sourced from responsibly managed forests (PEFC label). The sawdust is pressed into pellets using cogeneration and no glue or chemical additive is used. It is a 100% natural fuel.
As a garment confection company, we only use water for sanitary use. The usage of urban water has been stable since 2014, because since then, our sanitary installation is on rain water.
A study by our logistics platform is being conducted at this moment. The aim is to calculate CO2 emissions for all transport of goods and to reduce emissions the coming years. We will consider 3 types of transport:
Fleet: CO2 footprint
In order to reduce our footprint, we improved the average CO2 emission of our car park over the last 3 years.
